Voice Proficiency Exam
Music Worship Studies majors other than voice primary are required to demonstrate voice proficiency. All requirements must be passed with a minimum of 3 out of 5 (average of a three member faculty panel). Students will register for MUAPL 1120 or MUAPL 1121 until all sections of the VPE are passed with a 3 or higher.
Students must demonstrate CT-dominant (“head voice”), TA-dominant (“chest voice”), and mixed phonation. (Students will perform two contrasting songs)
Students must demonstrate a functional singing voice, sufficient to lead worship. (Rubric for all song selections will be judged on intonation/pitch accuracy, rhythmic consistency, and diction/articulation/intelligibility of the lyric)
Students must demonstrate understanding of the stylistic differences and particulars of Modern Worship music and Traditional Church music. (Students will perform two contrasting songs)
Students must demonstrate the ability to sing a harmony while another singer sings a melody. (A selection will be announced in advance of the VPE, and students should prepare or improvise a harmony part)
Students must demonstrate the ability to learn a simple song in 24 hours. All students taking the VPE will be emailed a simple song in lead sheet style (melody with chord symbols) 24 hours before the exam. Students must accompany themselves.
Students must demonstrate the ability to sing at sight a harmony part from a choral anthem or hymn while the other parts are played on the piano.
