Honors, Awards, and Medals

In the Spring of each academic year, awards are presented to students that achieve excellence in the following areas:

General Excellence Award: This award is offered by the university to a member of the senior class. It was originally known as the B.S.U. award and was provided by that organization. The award is made by the faculty to a student on the following basis: Christian character, leadership ability, and participation in university activities.

American Legion Citizenship Awards: Two American Legion Citizenship Awards are presented annually to the young man and the young woman in the senior class who best exemplify the qualities of good citizenship. Selection is made by the faculty on the basis of Christian attitudes, acceptable academic record, loyalty to American ideals, personal integrity, and exemplification of wholesome and helpful ideals.

General Work Award: The School of the Arts and The Cline School of Music have work awards available for choral librarian, property manager, stage manager, and fine arts faculty.

Mother Wingo Bible Award: The Mother Wingo Bible Award is given annually to the upperclassman whose work in Christian Studies is judged to be the best. The award is made in honor of the late Mrs. I. W. Wingo. Mrs. Wingo was for many years a member of the North Greenville University faculty and the first donor of the award. Selection of the student is made by vote of the members of the Christian Studies faculty.

Outstanding School of Communication Award: This award is given to an outstanding student in each of the school’s degree programs.

Outstanding Freshman Award: Each year the outstanding freshman is recognized and a plaque is awarded. This person is chosen by vote of the students and faculty.

Outstanding Senior Music Student Award: This award is made to the senior major who achieves the highest level of performance and academic excellence and maintains a GPA of 3.5 or better. The recipient is chosen by the music faculty.

Excellence in Education Awards: This award is made to the senior student teacher in each program who has outstanding academic achievement, service to public school, volunteer service to community, and demonstration of professional attitude indicative of commitment to teaching as a profession.

Honor Graduate: Any student whose accumulated grade point average is 3.5 or better will graduate with honors, which will be designated on the diploma.

Excellence in Business Administration Award: This award is provided by the Underwood Corporation and goes to the student excelling in all areas of business education. This person is chosen by the business faculty on the basis of grades, personality, efficiency, and cooperation.

English Award: This award is given annually to a sophomore planning to major or minor in English who has done outstanding work. Selection is made by the English faculty.

Spanish Award: Each year the outstanding student in intermediate-level Spanish is recognized by an appropriate award.

French Award: Each year the outstanding student in intermediate-level French is recognized.

Theatre Award: The Theatre Department offers two awards to recognize student achievement in the department. They are voted on by both faculty and other students. The Student Leadership Award is given to the theatre major that demonstrates consistency in leadership and positive attitude in the department during the school year. The Departmental Award is given by the theatre Chair and faculty to the Senior level student who, over the course of his/ her academic career in the department, has displayed peer leadership, quality in the classroom and in production, who has achieved a good record in internships with area theatres, and who evidences the qualities necessary to succeed in graduate school or professional work in the theatre.

Holliday Award: An endowed award was established in memory of John Edgar Holliday by C. Leland and Jean Holliday Rodgers to be given to any graduate, faculty member, administrator, or long-time friend of North Greenville University who excels in some finer quality of life which is non-competitive and for which no award is expected.

Some qualities worthy of this award are Christian influence, loyalty, unselfishness, perseverance, heroism, or unusual accomplishment. This award is not given according to a schedule but as the occasion arises.

Edgar Rodgers Garrett Award: This award was established in memory of Edgar R. Garrett by the Arthur Garrett Jr. family. This award is made to an outstanding freshman who exhibits courage and determination in the pursuit of an education.
