An undergraduate major at North Greenville University consists of no fewer than thirty semester hours of course work beyond the introductory level in a specific field of study. Some majors require more than thirty (30) hours, and others have multiple tracks within the major. The purpose of major courses is to provide the student with detailed study of a field of knowledge that will equip the student to be employed in the field or to pursue graduate or professional studies in the field. The specific major requirements for each degree program are listed in the degree requirements section of this catalog. Students should be aware that many upper-level courses have prerequisites. Students should enroll in the prerequisite courses early enough in their college studies so that the upper-level courses can be completed in proper sequence.

Second Baccalaureate Degrees

A student who has received one bachelor’s degree from North Greenville University or another regionally accredited institution may receive a second bachelor’s degree based on the following requirements:

  • All admission requirements are met.

  • The second degree is not in the same major as the first degree.
  • At least 50% of the major specific credit hours required for the second degree are completed through NGU coursework.
  • The requirements for the second degree include a minimum of 30 new semester hours (depending upon the major) beyond those required for the first degree with a minimum of 24 upper-level credits (i.e., 3000-level and above).
  • Students approved for the second baccalaureate degree will be, in most cases, waived from University certain graduation requirements (i.e., Core Curriculum requirements). Students with an NGU baccalaureate degree will be waived from the 45 new semester hour requirement, from Core Curriculum requirements and the graduation requirements of chapel and cultural events since they will already have met those requirements. However, in all cases, students must fulfill all non- waived requirements for the second degree.
  • Second bachelor’s degree candidates are required to achieve a minimum 2.0 grade point average each term in order to maintain good academic standing.
  • Graduation requirements are determined by the degree requirements in place at the time of the student’s first enrollment term for the second degree.
  • Students at the undergraduate level may not be enrolled in concurrent undergraduate degree programs, but may regularly have second majors if they meet admissions qualifications.
  • Graduation Honors will be calculated as usual for the undergraduate student earning a second bachelor’s degree.

A second baccalaureate degree may not be the only option available to enhance academic credentials, to prepare for a change in career, or to obtain a professional certification. In some cases, all that may be needed are additional undergraduate courses. The advising units of the NGU colleges, the graduate programs, the adult professional programs, and continuing studies may have more information on alternative paths. In some cases, the student may be encouraged to begin graduate-level academic work in the new discipline.

If a second bachelor’s degree is sought, this is possible in some, but not necessarily all, college programs of NGU when the second degree is in a sufficiently different field of study. Students should consult with the Office of the Dean of the college or the Department Chair offering the desired degree. See the double counting credits policy.

Second Bachelor’s Degree students will be considered for Federal Direct Stafford Loan eligibility (subject to annual and aggregate limits). They are not federally eligible for Pell Grants and there are no NGU need-based institutional grants or scholarships available for these students. Credit-based private alternative student loans for students who qualify with the lender may also be an option. Parents of dependent undergraduate students may also apply for the Federal Direct Parent PLUS Loan.

Second Master Degree

A student who already holds a master’s degree and who wishes to receive a second master’s degree must complete all requirements for the degree, including a minimum of 24 additional semester hours in residence. A student may apply up to a maximum of 12 semester hours of related graduate credit (6 hours for the MBA, 35 hours for the MDiv) from an earlier graduate degree to a master’s degree. The second degree must still be different from the first degree awarded.
