Spanish majors who wish to be certified to teach Spanish in the South Carolina public school system must enroll in the Spanish Education program, which differs from the BA in Spanish degree program. In Spanish Education, students are prepared to achieve a high level of proficiency in the language and to become effective teachers who employ current best teaching practices in their classes.
The Spanish Education degree equips students who desire to become certified to teach Spanish in the South Carolina public school system. The Department of Modern Languages and Linguistics will work with students majoring in Spanish Education so that they will have the opportunity develop a multicultural worldview within a biblical context, communication skills, writing skills, and teaching skills. The Department of Modern Languages and Linguistics will monitor the students’ progress and provide feedback concerning their studies. At the time of graduation, a Spanish Education major should have an advanced-low proficiency in the Spanish language on the American Council on the Teaching of Foreign Languages (ACTFL) scale and demonstrate significant knowledge plus appreciation of Hispanic linguistics, literature, and culture. These students should also earn a passing score on the Praxis 2 Spanish Exam.
