Federal Pell Grant Program

The Federal Pell Grant Program is a source of grant aid that does not require repayment and is sponsored by the federal government. The amount of an eligible student’s grant is determined by financial need, cost of education, enrollment status (half, three-quarter, or full-time), and congressional appropriation. Students who have previously earned a baccalaureate degree are not eligible.

Federal Supplemental Educational Opportunity Grant Program (FSEOG)

The FSEOG Program is another source of grant aid sponsored by the federal government. To be eligible for FSEOG assistance, a student must be eligible to receive a Pell Grant. Grant amounts vary and funding is limited.

This program provides employment opportunities for students who demonstrate financial need. Funds are limited. Job opportunities can be reviewed on the NGU website or students can contact the Financial Aid Office.

Federal Direct PLUS Loan Program (PLUS)

The Federal PLUS Loan Program makes loans to parents of dependent undergraduate students and eligibility is determined by a credit check. The annual loan limit will equal the cost of education minus other aid. Repayment of the loan begins within 60 days of loan disbursement or may be deferred until six months after the student graduates or cease to be enrolled on at least a half-time basis at an institution of higher education. Parents must apply on-line at https://studentaid.gov using their FSA User ID.

Federal Direct Student Loan Program

The Federal Direct Student Loan Program enables a student to borrow directly from the government. A student must be enrolled for at least six hours and must demonstrate financial need by completing a FAFSA. The Financial Aid Office will counsel students as to the types of loans they may be eligible to receive and as to the amount they may borrow. New borrowers must complete an annual online student loan acknowledgement, an entrance counseling session, and sign a Master Promissory Note before a loan is available.

These requirements must be completed online at https://studentaid.gov using the student’s FSA User ID.

The dollar amount a student may borrow is based upon grade level.

  • Freshman status -  up to $5,500 per year
  • Sophomore status - up to $6,500 per year
  • Junior and Senior status - up to $7,500 per year

Repayment of the loan begins six months after the student graduates or ceases to be enrolled on at least a half-time basis at an institution of higher education.
