Internship Policy
Internships are professional learning experiences that take place outside of the classroom and involve working with a company or organization typically distinct from NGU. Internships at NGU will follow the guidelines outlined in this policy. Specific departments reserve the right to assign a stricter internship policy, but all must include the minimum requirements outlined below.
Placement
• Must take place outside of the sponsoring department.
• Must be supervised by an expert in the field.
• Can be located by the student or the department but must be approved prior to registering for the class by the Faculty Internship Coordinator.
• Must offer the student intern the opportunity to gain experience in their field.
• In the case of multiple internships, each internship must offer the student some form of new learning or experience.
Qualifications
• Completed 12 hours in the major for which they are doing the internship
• Academic good standing
• Clear disciplinary record
Requirements
• Should be completed within one semester.
• A minimum of 40 hours of supervised work must be completed per semester hour of internship credit. Internships may vary from one to six semester hours credit.
• Travel time to/from the internship site is not counted in internship hours.
• Hours spent working for the internship prior to the formal internship agreement are not counted toward the internship hours.
• Hours spent on coursework do not apply.
• Only one Internship course may be taken in any given semester.
• Only nine hours of internship may be applied to graduation.
• Internships can be paid or unpaid.
• The intern is responsible for transportation to and from the internship site.
• The intern must abide by the
NGU Student Handbook at all times while completing their internship.
• The intern must follow all policies and regulations of the company to which he/she is assigned.
Roles
The Faculty Internship Supervisor
• An NGU Faculty member
• Connects the interested intern with the External Internship Supervisor.
• Evaluates the student's performance during the internship.
The External Internship Supervisor
• An employee of the company offering the internship.
• Selects the appropriate intern for the projects, trains the intern, and assigns work to the intern.
• Supervises the intern for assigned projects and their successful completion.
• Maintains close contact with the Faculty Internship Coordinator at NGU.
• Completes all paperwork required by NGU for the fulfillment of the internship.
The Intern
• Picks the right internship in consultation with the Faculty Internship Supervisor.
• Make available the name, phone number and email address of his/her External Internship Supervisor.
• Performs duties as assigned by the External Internship Supervisor.
• Follows all employment guidelines of the internship.
• Attends all meetings required by the Faculty Internship Supervisor.
• Submits all requirements of the internship at the appropriate time.
