Minimum and Maximum Credit Hours Policy
Traditional Undergraduate Students:
The minimum student load for a full-time undergraduate student is twelve (12) credit hours per semester. The student on Federal financial aid must enroll in no less than twelve (12) credit hours to be eligible for full aid. A student who registers for less than the minimum load is considered a part-time student.
An undergraduate student who has a cumulative grade point average of less than 3.0 is limited to nineteen (19) credit hours of academic work in a semester or Students on academic probation may not exceed thirteen (13) credit hours in a semester or Non-credit courses will be included in the total semester credit load hours.
Students who wish to enroll in more than nineteen (19) credit hours in a semester must have a cumulative grade point average of 3.0 or higher and must complete a Permission for Overload form prior to enrolling. This form can be found in the Student Portal as well as in Academic Records. The Office of Academic Administration gives final approval. An additional fee is charged for each credit hour beyond 19 total hours in a semester, regardless of totals in sub-terms, in accordance with the prevailing fee schedule.
The undergraduate maximum class load is twenty-three (23) credit hours per semester. The maximum summer session course load is ten (10) hours except for students enrolled in internships. Students in Honors at NGU may exceed the maximum load limit with approval from the Director of Honors at NGU or the Office of Academic Administration.
NGU Online Students:
The minimum student load for full-time undergraduate students enrolled in an NGU Online program is typically six (6) credit hours per 8-week term to reach the minimum of twelve (12) credit hours per semester. The student on Federal financial aid must enroll in no less than 12 credit hours per semester to be eligible for full aid. A student who registers for less than the minimum load is considered a part-time student. An undergraduate student who has a cumulative grade point average of less than 3.0 or is on academic probation is limited to six (6) credit hours of academic work in an 8-week term.
The undergraduate maximum class load is nine (9) hours in an 8-week term. Students who wish to enroll in 9 hours in an 8-week term must have a cumulative grade point average of 3.0 or higher and must complete a Permission for Overload form prior to enrolling. This form can be found in the Student Portal as well as in Academic Records. The Office of Academic Administration gives final approval.
Graduate Students:
The minimum student load for a full-time graduate student is six (6) hours per semester, typically taken as three (3) hours per 8-week term. Graduate students who take less than six (6) hours per semester are considered part-time students.
